Thundercloud Subs -great sandwich in a casual environment.

Thundercloud Subs has been in my life forever. The Austin sandwich chain was founded in 1975 and now spans over 29 different locations. The one pictured below is at 1700 Grand Avenue Parkway in Pflugerville. Thundercloud Subs introduced the Sub sandwich to Austin and boy are we thankful!

Thundercloud Pflugerville

Their shops are showcases to their local roots, featuring University of Texas memorabilia and local clippings now framed of their infamous Turkey Trots over the years (an annual run held Thanksgiving morning in Downtown Austin).

They offer hot and cold subs, some of my favorites are their ham sandwich and the meatball sub. Also on their menu include The Californian Club, with turkey, avocado and bacon, and the Austin club with mesquite smoked chicken, avocado, and bacon.  All made with fresh ingredients prepared right in front of you. They have a daily features section that highlights one of their amazing subs on discount that they rotate out weekly.

The sandwich pictured below is a ham on wheat with lettuce, onion, mayo and pickles with ham. The pickles are $0.30 extra but oh so worth it. Their sandwiches range from $3-6 depending on what size (regular or large) you order and the extras you get on top like avocados, jalapeños, sprouts, and bacon. They only use local and organic ingredients with their bread being made from scratch every morning from a local bakery.

I think I love it so much because it is such a representation of Austin. It’s consistently good food in a casual environment and it is good for you! And with 29 locations to choose from, I’m sure there is a thundercloud near you.

There is nothing quite like a Thundercloud sub and I find myself craving one every now and again. I hope next time you want a tasty sub sandwich you opt for a Thundercloud when you’re in the Austin area. They would love to serve you!
