St Philip – Austin, Texas

(NOW CLOSED FOR BUSINESS updated 11/13/15) In need of a yummy place for date night we had heard such great things about St. Philip that we decided to make the trip (4715 South Lamar) in the hopes of crossing this one off our long list of Pizza Parlors in Austin.

It’s located right off of South Lamar in the Sunset Valley shopping center, and is a quick drive from Downtown Austin no matter what part of town you reside in.

Upon walking up you’re greeted with a beautiful big white open patio that just calls to you as you glide inside. I love great outdoor spaces, perfect for a cool fall day. And this patio is dog friendly too!

The kitchen is exposed and offers a very modern take on a pizza parlor allowing guests the option to get as comfortable as they’d like with large benches for seats, and a bar offering up local craft beers and wines.

Day or night, St. Philip is the kind of place you could get lost at for a while.

The weather is cooling down so we decided to sit on the patio and watch the sunset while we enjoyed our night at St. Philip.

As we nestled into our seats our waitress came up and was very friendly and knowledgable. We immediately let her know we wanted to try some St. Philip staples but were really excited for dessert as we heard such amazing things about the bakeshop.

She recommended the polenta fries with Sunday gravy (which is just slang for tomato sauce). They were crispy but gooey on the inside and dipped in the tomato sauce, it was the perfect appetizer to share.

For those of you who might not know what polenta is, it is basically cornmeal porridge baked into fries.

We also ordered a House Meatball pizza made with Ricotta, Grilled Onion, Garlic, Basil, Chili Flakes, the pizza’s are about 12″ and easily shared between 2-3 friends.

The pizza was delicious but spicy (those chili flakes are no joke), so be forewarned. The crust was thin but held up nicely in keeping the toppings coming as we devoured this pizza.

Overall what was a winning moment to me was the service of St. Philip.

Our waitress let us know that the bakery portion of St. Philip had closed the Monday prior so that the restaurant could focus on their Dinner menu. She was sure to point out  that despite the bakeshop closing, some of the desserts would still be offered on their regular menu.

Of course we were still excited to try St. Philip and had a good meal so far, but as we were thinking about which dessert to pick from, she surprised us with a chocolate mousse cake.

The cake was compliments of the restaurant and a sweet and simple way for them to leave a lasting impression on this Austin food blogger.

Sprinkled on top of the cake is some Cayenne powder, it gives it just enough sizzle once you swallow the bite. Needless to say, it was perfect.

I will be coming back to St. Philip, why? Because they have all the right ingredients for a good night, perfect atmosphere, wonderful service, and flavorful pizza, small plates and desserts.

I hope you get to dine there soon!
