South Congress Cafe -my favorite brunch in Austin so far.
I have been craving Eggs Benedict all week. So much so, that I searched in Austin for where to find the the best, because if you’re gonna have it, you might as well have the best. I’ve had them here and there around town, but was curious where the best would be. So, when the number one restaurant on a couple of lists was South Congress Cafe (and we hadn’t been there before), we decided to head downtown and check it out for ourselves.
The cafe is situated in an old Austin Drugstore from the 1940’s. You can hardly tell, aside from hearing stories about the exposed brick being back from that original tenant. Opened in 2003, the focus of this eclectically Austin restaurant is on their scratch kitchen.
We went there on a Sunday for brunch around 10am and waited about an hour to get seated for two. They set our cell number up with a text alert, so we took off down SoCo for a stroll and came back when they texted us that the table was ready. That was really sweet so we didn’t just have to sit around waiting and we got to check out some of our favorite stores along the way.
Because I came here on a mission for Eggs Benedict, I already knew what I wanted when we sat down. My boyfriend on the other hand, had a couple of ideas because honestly everything on the menu looked good. They had wonderful sounding lemon and ricotta pancakes, and some yummy looking (We peeked at a couple sitting behind us) omelettes. But when we spotted the Croque Madame on the menu, we knew we couldn’t go wrong.
When the food was brought out we were in love. It looked so good we could only hope the taste lived up to the look. And it absolutely did. It was just really really really amazing. The flavors were heavenly, between the hollandaise sauce on the Eggs Benedict and the mornay sauce on the Croque Madame we couldn’t stop eating off of each others plates. We were also a little mad at each other for having never discovered this place sooner, and agreed almost instantaneously that we would come here at least once a month if not more because we sincerely loved it so much.
So there you have it, probably my favorite brunch so far in Austin.
