Phils Icehouse -the happiest burger joint in Texas.

Phils Icehouse touts itself as the happiest burger joint in Texas, and I think I’d have to agree with them on that one. Started by Amy and Steve Simmons the founders of Amy’s Ice Creams as a compliment to their burgeoning Ice cream business, Phil’s is your neighborhood burger place that promotes community and a dang good burger.

The story about Phils Icehouse goes way back to 1985 when Amy first met Phil Clay. The story goes that Phil worked for Amy back in the 90s- early 2000’s, ultimately becoming one of Amy’s Ice Creams partners and head ice cream makers. A bad accident caused Phil to lose his life in 2003, but he had made such a lasting impression on Amy and Amy’s Ice Creams, that when Amy and her husband Steve decided to open a burger shop to compliment their growing Ice Cream business, they couldn’t think of anything more perfect than paying tribute to Phil with the restaurant.

One of the great things about Phil’s is the passion for the Austin community. The menu is simple and no frills, but offers up some of the best burgers in this fair city.

With menu items like the “78704” burger made to pay homage to the “south of the river”  topped with Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeƱos, grilled onions, sliced avocado, and chipotle mayo on a toasted jalapeƱo cheese bun. Or the Jollyville burger made with bacon, egg, cheddar cheese, and a burger served between two slices of sourdough french toast. You get to enjoy a little piece of the great Austin community that is infused in their menu.

I love the sweet buns, almost like a hawaiian roll, paired with mixed fries featuring half sweet potato fries, half french fries. It’s the perfect meal. It really is one of my favorite burgers, especially if you’re a fan of sweet bread. I love getting the Allandale burger, which is an all American cheeseburger topped with cheddar cheese, sliced onions, sliced tomato, lettuce, pickles, mayo and mustard on a toasted sourdough bun.

And the atmosphere is lighthearted, big picnic tables to encourage family style dining, and kid friendly activities like playscapes and coloring books are found readily in the shop. Whether you’re 6 or 60, Phil’s has something for everyone.

You can find Phil’s near Amy’s Ice Creams with 3 locations around Austin, Burnet Road, South Lamar, and  183 North. The perfect night is a stop at Phils for a burger and a pop into Amy’s for a milkshake. I hope you get to dine at Phil’s soon, it really is one of my favorite Austin burgers!
