Small town diner serving bit time flavor at Georgetown’s Monument Cafe

Growing up in Austin, I spent my fair share of time in Georgetown’s historic town. Only 40 miles north of Downtown Austin, once you arrive in Georgetown you’re delighted with hill country views, a river rushing right through the center of town, and picturesque old-time buildings that have been maintained to show off their grandeur.

But I hadn’t been to Monument Cafe, and for whatever reason had heard a lot about it lately. From friends who had celebrated big events there with large parties, to another couple who said they went there after their hike around the San Gabriel River. It sounded like the perfect place for us to try so one Sunday morning we woke up early and made the drive for breakfast.

Eggs Benedict

Founded in 1995, this place has created a name for themselves for serving up fresh, local and organic Texas inspired meals at this roadside cafe.

The place was packed, but we got there right before the church crowd let out around 9:30am. If you’re looking to get in and get out, try arriving before 9am on weekends as the place can fill up quickly. Know that if you spot a seat or two at the long bar top, those are first come first serve. And if you find yourself waiting, just take a stroll through the Monument Cafe Market which features local and organic meat, dairy and produce products. They also take your cell number and text you when the table is ready, so you can even go walk around the town if you’d like, just don’t stroll too far. You’ll want to be close by when your table is ready!

We waited about 15 min and were seated in the big bright retro looking dining room. We always show up to restaurants with intention, you know me, I’ve got food on my mind all the time, so I knew I wanted to have the Eggs Benedict, and for our second dish we decided to try the Migas Skillet. It was Migas on top of home fries and served with a side of refried beans and it was excellent!

I can’t wait to go back, they have a biergarten which sounds perfect for the spring/summer months. And their menu looks so good I seriously have to go back for lunch and dinner. I’m hooked now, and hope you’ll give them a try too!
