Lonesome Dove -Austin inspired, urban western cuisine.

When Lonesome Dove moved into Downtown Austin, it was stirring up a buzz about town. The second restaurant from Tim Love after opening his flagship Lonesome Dove in Fort Worth 15 years ago brings the same urban western cuisine, but with Austin inspired new dishes.

Since it moved in I’d had my heart set on eating there and that day has finally come.

If you’ve never made it to the original, you’re in for quite a treat with the Austin location. I love that the ambiance is western flared while also taking advantage of some of the Austin warehouse districts best open spaces by hanging large chandeliers of lights from the rafters.

I hear some of the animal heads are from Love’s personal collection, what a unique taste. And to match the aesthetic they have this beautifully ornate chandelier lighting fixture above their bar made out of antlers. Between the leather, exposed brick, and the smell of a fine western rub, take a sit down, order a drink and enjoy the ambiance.

We started our meal with a couple of the appetizers. First an order of Hamachi Tostadas, Citrus, Cilantro, Guanciale, Serrano and then Corn-Fried Catfish, Smoked Paprika Aioli.

The Hamachi was tender and the kick from the serrano made every bit unforgettable. And the corn-fried catfish, was fried to perfection.

Other items on the menu Rabbit-Rattlesnake Sausage, Blue Corn-Lobster Hushpuppies and Wild Boar Ribs.

Of the amazing western trail inspired cuisine we wanted to try the daily special and the sandwich of the day. Pictured below is the sandwich of the day, which was about 6-7 meats ranging from quail to rattlesnake to rabbit, pounded together and marinaded in a vegetable sauce, and then sliced thin into a sandwich with a side of crispy french fries.

The meat was full of so much flavor and the fact that it had so much depth was impressive at the technique of combining that many different types of meats.

I wanted to opt for the capital special of the day which was an open faced brisket sandwich with a side of street corn and mashed potatoes. The brisket had the perfect amount of marbling and the fat was so flavorful, paired with a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, it hit the spot.

I am so glad I was able to try the Lonesome Dove, and good thing it moved in just a couple of blocks away from my office. It is the perfect place for a client lunch or date night. In the heart of Downtown, you can’t be led astray at the Lonesome Dove. When you go, tell them Dine With Shayda sent you.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
