Who: Kung Fu Saloon
What: An Austin bar and restaurant serving up drinks, dishes, in a relaxed environment with old- school arcade games
When: Starting at 11am on Saturday and Sundays
Where: Domain- 11501 Rock Rose #140, Austin, TX 78758 and Downtown- 510 Rio Grande St, Austin, TX 78701
Why: When I found out Kung Fu Saloon was debuting a brunch menu, I was intrigued. They’ve been known for an inventive Bar menu, so what better next step than to take the plunge and offer something for the breakfast bunch.
The menu was created by Chef Blake Keeley, you may recognize that name for being the Executive Chef at Benji’s Cantina, a now-closed restaurant that was known for its fantastic fajitas on West 6th. KPG Hospitality is the parent company to Benji’s and Kung Fu Saloon and so there are currently plans for Kung Fu Saloon to move into the old Benji’s space with an opening date set for later this year.
Moving into that bigger space with a full kitchen will allow Kung Fu Saloon to expand on their current offerings and was the inspiration to launch a brunch menu.
I was invited to the Domain location to get a sampling of it, which is currently available as of now on Saturday and Sunday starting at 11am.
The menu is short and sweet to the point and offers non-traditional ways of presenting breakfast, like in breakfast egg rolls or a breakfast flatbread pizza.
But my two favorites of the morning were hands down the Kimchi tater tots covered in Korean ribeye. It was a mountain of epicness and the perfect way to kick start brunch paired with a margarita or bloody mary.
If you’re craving something sweeter, you should check out the cheesecake sopapilla french toast, there is a cheesecake filling that oozes out perfectly as you take a bite into the fried french toast. It’s served with a maple syrup and a sweet chile raspberry dipping sauce, I preferred the raspberry dipping sauce because it gave it a nice little kick with the added chile.
If you’re in the mood for a healthy brunch, this is not the place for you. However, if you’re looking for a boozy brunch where you can relax and indulge in some hangover cures, then Kung Fu Saloon has your next brunch outing ready and waiting.
