If you live in Austin you’ve probably heard of Comedor by now. The newest project by acclaimed chefs Gabe Erales and Philip Speer that sits at the corner of 5th and Colorado can’t be missed either, it’s a big, mysterious, black box designed by Seattle architecture firm Olson Kundig.

The menu is modern Mexican, and the space is an oasis in the middle of bustling downtown Austin full of big glass windows, high vaulted ceilings, and a private intimate garden space in the center of the restaurant.
They were recently named top 10 restaurant on Esquires Top 22 restaurants in America of 2019 and it’s for good measure. The food is inventive, simply prepared, and just plain delicious.
A recent addition to their popular and beloved menu is a bar happy hour perfect for anyone who has been curious to try Comedor but hasn’t been able to make a reservation. It’s first come first serve, 5-6:30p at the bar, and you can choose from 3-course taco tasting or a 5-course taco tasting for $15 and $25 respectively.
We went for the 5 taco tasting menu featuring 1. Masa Fried Monkfish, 2. Butternut Squash, 3. Carnitas, 4. Lengua, and 5. a dessert taco (ours was a banana ice cream taco).
