What: Boozy pop up patio serving drinks and lite bites
When: Tuesday to Sunday 11:30am – 10pm, Monday 4pm-10pm (Weather Permitting)
Where: 118 N Green St. Chicago, IL 60661
Why: Expat is such a treat. It’s a pop-up patio, al fresco style that serves light bites and boozy sweet cold treats. I came across another bloggers photo on Instagram of the place, the caption said adult snow cones and I was hooked. So when we were visiting Chicago, this was one place I had to bee line to check out.
We showed up right as they opened, not knowing what to expect since we were on a tight schedule to get back to Lollapalooza, a music festival we were in town for. It’s literally in an enclosed area on a sidewalk between two planters. The space maybe seats 30 people and is decked out in bright fluorescent patio chairs and marble table tops. We almost missed it if it weren’t for the small neon sign that read ‘Expat’ on the wall as we walked by.
But we made it, it was a gorgeous sunny day outside, perfect for rewarding ourself with a sweet treat or two. We were here on a mission, to try the snow cone and freeze pops. Both are made with alcohol and both were magnificent. We started with the snow cones, they offer rotating flavors, and we ordered one Rosé and one Passion Fruit. You could taste the alcohol but it mixed well with the fruit flavor of the Passion Fruit. And it was the ultimate treat with the boozy fruity concoction poured over freshly shaved ice.
The other thing we tried were the boozy freeze pops, because well we came all this way. And at $5 a pop it was well worth indulging in. We had one rum, pineapple and coconut flavor which tasted like a piña colada. And one tequila, grapefruit and lime which had fresh lime zest mixed in which really made the popsicle pop!
If you’re in the mood for food, they offer East and West coast oysters, sandwiches, salads and crudo. You can also order beer, wine and cocktails, but the real reason to come is for the adult frozen treats.
Next time we’re in Chicago you can find us on the Expat patio. It’s in a super cute, walkable neighborhood, and the perfect place for drinks with friends if you’re in the West Loop area. I hope when you go you’ll let them know Dine With Shayda sent you. And be sure to follow me on Instagram and Snapchat for daily food adventures @DineWithShayda.
