Why: Japanese style conveyor belt sushi has hit Austin, Kula is officially open! The restaurant is operated by a Japanese Revolving Sushi chain that has other location in California and Texas, but this will be the first location in the capital city.

I was invited by a friend to preview this new place, it was doing a test run for the kitchen to practice, but Kula ended up being pretty packed as news had spread fast that they were having a soft preview.

It was like nothing I had ever experienced before, there is a giant sushi conveyor belt that wraps around the restaurant. There are two levels of conveyor belts, one the constant and revolving main level one with perfectly placed domes filled with different types of dishes. The second was a delivery mechanism for the order panel which allows you to order directly from the extensive menu versus waiting for what you want to make it’s way around on the conveyor belt.

On the menu they offer nigiri, sushi rolls, boxes, ramen as well as an assortment of other dishes and desserts. There’s even a little bit of gamification that for ever 5 plates you deposit into the plate disposal, you can win a prize from the Bikkura- Pon game.

It’s a fun family friendly restaurant, that serves organic, non MSG’d, and additive free food. It’s food that I can feel good about eating and indulging in with a little bit of fun served on the side.

They’re open now, so be sure to go check Kula out and give them a try!
